Bible Lands Programs

CTSP offers two kinds of trips: customized itineraries and pre-formatted courses (that are somewhat styled for time of year and group). Some of the common pre-formatted courses are:
CJTB01 Journey through the Bible I: Genesis to Malachi (Course can include sites in Egypt, Israel, and/orJordan)

This course incorporates up to date archaeological information with the chronology and text analysis of the Biblical record. Using the interface of the disciplines of critical analysis, historical geography, archaeology and cultural studies in ancient cultures, a general model of ancient history is chronologically surveyed from the Patriarchs to the Persian Period. A desert camel trek and camping in a controlled setting are part of the program. Students with strict physical limitations can be accommodated, but prior notice to the Registrar of the Jerusalem Institute is required in such cases. Study in the regions of the Red Sea, Paran Desert, Zin Desert, Aravah, Dead Sea, and Judean Mountains are all included in this program. Both classroom and on-site lectures are incorporated into the course structure. (Prerequisite: none).

CJTB02 Journey through the Bible II: The Life and Ministry of Jesus (Israel)
This course presents a basic framework of chronology of the Gospel accounts set in their physical and geographical context. It further explores the impact of Second Temple Period culture on the interpretation of the New Testament literature. A light treatment of critical text analysis is blended with historical geography, archaeology and studies in ancient cultures to provide some general guidelines for interpretation of the narrative in its original story setting. Field trips to major sites in Galilee, Samaria, and Judea are supplemented by the study of artifacts and major excavations to enhance the interpretation of the texts. (Prerequisite: CJTB01 recommended).

CJTB03 Journey through the Bible III: The Journeys of Paul (Cyprus, Turkey, Greece)

Interfacing the disciplines of text analysis, historical geography, archaeology and studies in ancient cultures, this course is designed for students who are interested in the chronology and the interpretation of the New Testament. Our focus will be the life and work of the Apostle Paul chronologically surveyed and harmonized between Acts and the Epistles. Field trips to major sites in the mission Journeys of Paul are supplemented by the study of museum artifacts and major archaeological sites. (Prerequisite: CJTB02 recommended). Some hiking and walking will be required.

CJTB04 Journey through the Bible IV: The Seven Churches of Revelation (Turkey)

This course is designed for students who are interested in the interpretation of Apocalyptic literature set in historical context. Using the disciplines of historical geography and archaeology, the text of the second and third chapters of Revelation is carefully set in physical context. In addition, topics including the Homeric Epics and Foundations of Ionian Philosophy will be explored. Field trips to the seven sites in the text are supplemented by the study of artifacts and major excavations to enhance the interpretation of the texts. Excursions to several other excavations of cities from the New Testament (Pauline sites) will be included. Some hiking and walking will be required. (Prerequisite: CJTB02 recommended).
